Like every roleplay that has ever existed, you'll need characters to truly integrate with the setting and to...well, fully enjoy playing on the server with other members and their characters. However, before everyone jumps the gun and starts snatching characters left and right there are a few things to keep in mind when a character is being considered, especially one that is of canon origin. Original content in Touhou can be fabricated at leisure but, to play a canon role requires as well as an ability to fully understand the role that canon character has in Gensokyo's universe and how you can properly play it.
Anyways, I think that's everything. Fellow Mods/Admins, let me know if there's things I've missed or if there are any other such points you would like to make.
- To begin, let us cover the number of characters that is current available for one player to hold at a given time. Upon joining, a single member is only allowed to have One "main" character followed by two alts and a single "OC". Your 'main' characters is the very first character you lay claim to and an alt are other characters you choose after your main. A limit on character claims is in place to make sure a single member doesn't hold too many characters and so others are given a chance to play who they desire.
- Secondly, "important" canon characters such as major faction leaders, Stage 6, EX, Phantasm bosses or characters who are simply too powerful to leave in the hands of just anyone require a special application attached to help us figure if you are cut out for playing such a character. The reasoning behind this rule is simple and it's to make sure no one takes the most powerful characters and simply goes apeshit with them across the server. With great power comes responsibility, as they say, and just like anything else that involves someone wielding a lot of power, you will need to prove to us that you can be trusted with playing such characters. However, an exception to this is Yukari Yakumo, who is permanently assigned to our Admin, Utsuho Reiuji given the sheer scale of both her powers and her importance to the canon world.
- Lastly, fanon characters (such as Sendai Miko) who have a canon precedence can count as a main alt or an OC. This is an odd boundary that skirts both the line of fanon and canon and can make for a difficult time discerning whether a character should be classed an OC or apart of the actual Touhou canon. To begin, Sendai Miko, is a character that is portrayed as being a shrine maiden from "a previous generation", one that predates Reimu's by an unknown amount of years. At first glance, you can already see where this can create confusion since, one one hand there's no evidence stating Sendai Miko existed in the setting at all but, at the same time just there being other Hakurei shrine maidens from past also gives speculation that, at one point, she could have been roaming Gensokyo punching out youkai with her divine fists of youkai sealing.
- Let it be known that pure fanon material injected into a canon character is considered an "OC" since the traits used for said canon role was created by the fandom and thus not considered a part of canon. That said, it's highly recommended that members take time to research the canon role they wish to play, mostly in a sense of learning how your desired characters function in the setting and how they interact with others. I'm sure you're wondering "but, Luize! What about the characters that have little to no information on how they canoncially act?" and to that, I can present the same answer. Let's take my character, Luize, as an example; being a Pc98 era character, there is very little information on her actual personality and such so naturally, . However, reading up on her dialouge in Mystic Square, Luize comes off as someone who's polite and holds a quite bit of patience towards others. Tourism and travel could be a hobby for hers as she was one of the demons from Makai who showed an interest in going to Gensokyo during Mystic Square. Being of Makai, Luize is a bit closer to other Demons from that realm and while she does interact with 'outsiders' from beyond Makai's border, her polite nature makes it easy for her to get along with others. She naturally see's Shinki as a ruler given her position in Makai.
See? That wasn't entirely painful. Indeed, most of this information is assumptions however, one can look at what information is provided for Luize and find that it still matches with her character. A lot of things are assumed but, at the same time, they can work as canon materials.
Anyways, I think that's everything. Fellow Mods/Admins, let me know if there's things I've missed or if there are any other such points you would like to make.
